How To Clean and Re-Sand a Block Paving Driveway (The Right Way)

Step 1: Apply Weedkiller (7 Days Before Cleaning)

To make life easier, apply a residual weedkiller about a week before cleaning. This gives time for the product to work and kill deep-rooted weeds, making them easier to remove during pressure washing.

Step 2: Pressure Wash – Surface Cleaner First, Then Lance

Start with a flat surface cleaner to evenly remove surface dirt, algae, moss and grime without disturbing the sand too aggressively.

Then follow up with a pressure washer lance to get into any stubborn edges, corners, or heavily soiled spots.

This two-stage method gives the best visual result while keeping joint disruption to a minimum.

Step 3: Let It Dry- Read it Twice

Allow the surface to dry fully. This is essential before re-sanding as wet blocks will cause the kiln-dried sand to clump and settle unevenly.

Step 4: Re-Sand with Kiln-Dried Sand

Brush kiln-dried sand into all the joints using a stiff broom. This stabilises the blocks, keeps weeds out, and helps prevent block movement.

Sweep the sand diagonally across the paving for even distribution, and remove excess from the surface.

Step 5: Apply a Biocide Treatment

Finish with a biocide treatment to kill any remaining organic growth (like moss or lichen spores) and prevent regrowth.

This step is often missed but it’s the key to keeping your driveway looking sharp for longer.

Bonus Step: Compaction (Optional)

If you want maximum joint stabilisation, use a plate compactor to vibrate the sand deeper into the joints. Then top up with sand and sweep off the excess.
